Skilled Occupation List Update

June 9, 2011

The Australian Skilled Occupation List (SOL) will be changed from 1st July 2011. 4 occupations are going to be removed and 13 new occupations will be added.

The Skilled Occupation List details the occupations that are eligible for independent and unsponsored skilled migration. The updates made to the Skilled Occupation List will be based on advice and recommendations given by the independent body Skills Australia. The occupations listed are high value to the Australian economy and include managerial, professional and trade occupations.

The Australian Government is committed to a successful skilled migration program that will solve the labour shortages the economy is currently facing. The occupations list highlights the areas of skilled migration the government are keen to expand.

The program is being continually reviewed to ensure it meets targets and provides support for the growing economy. The occupations list needs to be regularly updated so that the migration programme is responsive to labour shortages and skills requirements.

The updated SOL will apply to all new independent or unsponsored skilled migration applications lodged on or after 1 July 2011 unless they are from applicants eligible for transitional arrangements.∗ Applications with a nominated occupation that is no longer on the SOL in effect from 1 July 2011 will continue to be processed. Priority processing arrangements may however change for certain applicants according to the Ministerial Direction on priority processing.
