Melbourne crowned the world’s most liveable city

August 30, 2011

Knocking reigning favourite Vancouver off the top ranking for the first time in almost a decade, the popular Australian city of Melbourne has been crowned the world’s most liveable city.

The city received a ranking of 97.5% out of 100 to edge out the next nine closest competitors by just 1.4%. Australia together with Canada played host to seven out of the top ten cities.

Editor for the EIU survey Jon Copestake believes the relaxed lifestyle and strong economy within Australia means that many cities within the country regularly perform well in this index.

"Australia, with a low population density and relatively low crime rates, continues to supply some of the world's most liveable cities," he said.

The EIU survey compares and contrasts a range of aspects of living including:

  • Education
  • Hygeine
  • Environment
  • Recreation
  • Safety
  • Public Transport.
