Australian Migration Policy Overhaul

June 30, 2011

The Australian Skilled Migration Program is set to undergo an overhaul in the middle of next year, introducing a new application system to target the brightest and most highly skilled applicants that are best-suited to the current market demands in Australia.

The system will now adopt a process similar to that in New Zealand where potential visa applicants must lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) to migrate to Australia and then await an invitation from the Australian Government before undergoing the application process.

The Government hopes that the introduction of a system will allow it to streamline applications and therefore speed up the application process. The Government will be able to manage who and how many people are able to apply and therefore target current in demand areas and areas which require additional skilled migrants.

The system will also allow State and Territory Governments to identify key areas of growth and match applicants to those areas accordingly. Applicants will be allowed to nominate if they wish to live or work in a rural area where their specific occupation may be in demand.

The model is set for introduction in mid-2012, so anyone that is eligible to migrate under the current program should consider lodging their applications soon.
